The trees lean

The trees
lean in the forest,
encouraged by wet snow—
they are different
from the rest,
singled out
to bend
and break—

yet these are the ones
gathered
by rays of sunlight
that catch the ice
on down swept branches—
no!
by starlight that catches
us dreaming—
a light
shining in the darkness.
