Night
by Janet Granger

Ideas collide and tumble, like dice,
a chance truth.
If I am lucky, they
bubble up from within like the
ping pong balls you see on television,
for the lottery numbers.
I concentrate, eyes closed,
forcing one to pop up,
the winner,
fitting snugly in its
proper place.
I turn on the light,
pulling out the bedside drawer to
grab paper and pen.
I close my eyes from the light to
force the winner back into
focus,
then scribble madly, before it is
gone,
bouncing back into the game of
night's slumber.
