Evolution
by R. Drew

Towels strewn about the bathroom
Spoons and half-empty cups across the counter
Toothbrush on her nightstand
Finally
I don't have to oversee every detail of her life
With sad relief I recognize my dawning obsolescence.
I gather inside-out pants and crumpled socks; sometimes,
She dresses herself too
I remember the first time:
I sighed and bent to grab a heap of clothes
From her little snack table
Quietly as she slept--
And I slowly realized...
Purple socks and a purple sweater
Pink pants and a tiny pink shirt--it was
Color matched.
Carefully selected coordinates
All in a pile
Ready for school in the morning.
I could hardly wait
Sure enough, she comes into the kitchen
Barely controlled glee--will I notice?
You dressed yourself! I observe
Yes, she allows grandly
And at first the pants were backwards
But I took them back off
And turned 'em around! See!

We stand, both silenced by pride
In our accomplishments
