An awkward silence

at the breakfast table
where a fast of words
limits even the contact of eyes
lest we be tempted to speak--
one learns to smile briefly,
point and raise the eye brow.
All that is missing
from a return to infancy
is the whine and whimper
of a one-year old
strapped in a high chair
not getting what he urgently needs,
dependent on the other
sitting by
for his very existence.
