The War Ended

just before Grandpa was sent over.
All that battle he’d never do.

When another fly buzzes
he gets the blue swatter
off the top of the fridge.
After he drops the fly in the garbage
he takes out his black marker
and makes another X. Careful
and precise crosshatches.
