dream sleep
By Alan MacDougall

It was a sleep that fell on me
It was the sleep of old men
in late afternoon
and the little knot of energy
dust devil of my life

misnamed -- I mean

I was free to dream
and go out and in with
other lives,
asking and answering
away from the sun I moved,
slowly and patiently and
into memories
that might or might not ever have been
