Earth
by Carolyn Fredericks

Drums resound, fill, feed
Earthtone pulses--
Air round,
Full in the hollow clarity of night,

The deep mellow richness
Static-edged, spreading

Mudsquelch--eyes closed,
Body melting softly
Into thick flow of motion.

Shapes melded together, sweet spice
Of grass, interlace of smell, touch,
Rolling browns and cinnamon barefoot

Toes circle over, arches and whorls blend
One and one.

Feet arched up, stretch to meet
Gentle press of hands on back,
Down of cheek on chest, on shoulder

Fingers running whispered
Through tangled shivers of hair

Breath's comfort on brow
Rhythmic, quickening like drumbeat.
