Red
by Andrea L. Alterman

Is the color of endings,
especially in September
when the equinox is near,
and the raspberries have all been picked,
the cherries pitted, then canned away
in the cellar along with the tomatoes,
plum for spaghetti sauce soaked in basil
and minced garlic, but red overall.

Red is the flavor of sunsets,
and fires banking down for a long roast,
for buds opening into the sunlight,
pulling in a beam to show off.

Red is the last color of the maple leaf
before it returns itself to the roots
that grew it, the color of being born,
of sleeping in the sun,
and kissing slowly on the lips.
