Gaze
by Cynthia Mellott

We cannot look at each other,
Fearful we will be transformed
Into pillars of salt
Made of the tears we will not
Allow ourselves to shed.
We cannot look at each other,
But must turn our backs
Lest we meet each other’s Medusa gaze
And be turned --not into
Stone
Which would be welcome with its
Cool solitude --
But into
Longing flesh.
