Kilauea
(The Island of Hawaii)

By David Meuel

A stream of fire flows out into the sea.
A choir of hisses, a shock of steam, and
the transformation occurs: scalding to
warm, orange to black, liquid to solid,
lava to land. Here, this is how new earth
is born, the island growing by the hiss.

As you gave birth, you sang in hisses, too:
those quick and shallow bursts to help
you handle all the pain you felt
as our son prepared to flow from you.
Another song that calmed and reconciled.
Another transformation of the world.
