Silent Retreat

The chatter
of silverware
is all that
breaks the silence
in this fast
of conversation
where there
is the tacit
agreement
that I don’t
need
to rush to
fill the void
with small
talk--
I can listen
to the small
chinks
in the nothingness,
the being
with my life
at rest--
the taking in
of a meadow
out the window
without
the gilding.
