The classic poem for this issue of The Fairfield Review was written by William Carlos Williams (1883 - 1963), celebrated poet and doctor of the people of Rutherford, New Jersey. With the November elections looming in the U.S., this poem reminds us to pay attention to the pain of poor. --egh

A big young bareheaded woman
in an apron

Her hair slicked back standing
on the street

One stockinged foot toeing
the sidewalk

Her shoe in her hand. Looking
intently into it

She pulls out the paper insole
to find the nail

That has been hurting her
