dog spelled backwards
By Halsted

Curtis
as you spoke
I saw
the mangy, unkempt dog
on the inner track of the highway
walking on three legs
its left rear leg held high
broken, no doubt
by a vehicle
unseeing cars in the thunder rain.
Curtis,
I saw its
eyes
pain, fear, bewilderment
eyes of anything that has had too
much happen with more to go.

dog
keep limping onward
to the fishes in the sea
to the traffic illuminated by lightning
to the gas chambers
to the heart of the gods
to the fury of war, famine, pain
to death

Curtis, I saw your
bedraggled torn dog
trembling
on the highway
his eyes
frantic
Curtis, I saw your dog.
