          Slipping
          By Lynn Patmalnee

          Skipping home from gymnastics class
          she hops
up on the curb, stands on her
          tippy-toes
          in Cinderella sneakers
          with pink and silver laces,
          arms outstretched like
          fairy wings.

          I envy how
          graceful
          she has learned to be.

          Then
          the question
          leaps
          from her lips.

          "Daddy's coming back soon,
          isn't he?"

          Standing beside her, I
          teeter
          on the truth,
          but when she
          beams at me with her
          happy ending eyes,
          I lose my footing,
          and with the words
          "Maybe
          someday”
          tumble
          to the ground,
          drag her down with me
          in a clumsy embrace.
