Watercolor based on photograph by David Lorenz Winston.
Tannenbaum

Sometimes
a path
through a wood,
as a fence
through a field,
takes a turn
here
and a jog
there,
dividing
even white
seamless
blankets of snow
that cover
all.
As the limbs
on this regal
oak,
which has stood
in the midst
of this scene
from the first,
stretch out
on either side,
rendering
our footsteps:
small,
our fences:
ripples,
our paths:
ever turning—
they cover all
beneath
a Christmas
crown.
