          Excuses
          By Bruce P. Spang

          The bruises come from falling
at night while mother is fast asleep.
Teeth marks on his arm are nothing.

at night while mother is fast asleep.
His blue-black spots you can follow like cities
on a map. Things happen when you sleep.
He refuses to expose his skinny legs.

So many? He fell many times. He has nightmares.

His mother arrives late. Does she care?

A social worker drops him off and says, Take care.
He takes my hand. We walk down the hall.
He has a bag with an harmonica and six cuddle bears.
He keeps to his story. He fell. That was all.
