Lenten Poems - 2006
Preface This year's retreat was titled "Make All Things New," led by Caroline and John Westerhoff of Atlanta, GA. The meditations for the retreat followed the baptismal vows in the Book of Common Prayer. To quote from the introduction to the retreat: "God has implanted in the human soul a quest for wholeness and health, holiness and peace. Lent is the season in which we reflect on our brokenness and sickness, incompleteness and estrangements, as we continue on our spiritual pilgrimage of living into our baptism and preparing for Easter, a season in which we celebrate God’s redemptive gift of new life." This year there are a dozen poems, some more inspired than others. The poems Expectant and Grace, are ones where I had an idea to which I wanted to add voice. These run the risk of "soap box" poems that tell instead of show. Then there are the poems that sang to me, such as The Faith of Juncos and Essence. For these there was more the discovery in the image, following the path to the end rather than having the end in mind at the beginning.
