Christmas 2011
Cedar
Ah, my old friend, only you have stood steadfast thru my years; the walkway buckles your roots under my feet; I notice you late; it is an autumn day, still green with life; I catch my shoe where the seams do not meet and I am grounded in your shadows— all this I imagine long before I come to the turn in the flagstone path, touch the soft fingers of your hands, and become a child.
A Candle Rose
An unexpected candle in the snow It stands against the winter night A rosebud out of season knows
The winter is a time that slows The days are short, there is no light An unexpected candle in the snow
This is the spring that always flows Flakes form a halo of passing white A rosebud out of season knows
The opening is the now that slows A king in cradle is a sight An unexpected candle in the snow
Hark there is an unwrapped bow A hint of red is ever light A rosebud out of season knows An unexpected candle in the snow
Setting
I don’t think I will ever tire of setting suns— those little deaths that come upon the lake and splash with life as toddlers in the shallows; yea, they come with wings that lift and soar even in their ebbing— oh to live and like a light of burning amber go out behind the silhouettes of Alps and name upon the wind.
