Couplets: Conversation in Verse
Introduction

By Janet and Edward Granger-Happ
Editors, The Fairfield Review

We are proud to present this selection of works from the editors of Connecticut’s first on-line literary magazine, The Fairfield Review. This collection of poems began eight years ago, across a table in a bookstore. Two writers met each week to exchange poems, talk about their work and offer suggestions for improvement.

The collection is made more interesting by the fact that a romance began and flourished from those early conversations. It is very obvious from a reading of these poems that a number of them are love poems, though hopefully not simply the variety found on greeting cards, or worse on Mylar balloons with curled ribbons.

Many of the poems are simply a reply of one poem to another, on a common theme, words, or work of art--whether written at the time or later selected for this collection. Robert Frost offered that we should "talk a poem," say it as if a conversation, rather than a performance. We like that image. This talking-of-the-poems is the heart of this collection, and they should be read across a table, or on a couch, rather than standing before an audience.

We hope this collection will bring a smile and warm a heart. As editors of The Fairfield Review, we will continue to find and encourage new voices, delivering exciting new works to our audience through the powerful medium of the Internet. Because we are a not-for-profit organization, we donate our time and efforts and, though our costs are low, we still do have expenses, from printing this book to maintaining our web-site. If you appreciate our mission and our success to date, please consider a donation to The Fairfield Review. You can give a gift on-line at www.fairfieldreview.org. Most importantly, tell your friends, family, and students you know about it, and encourage them all to read, write, and share!

We hope you enjoy these works as much as we did when we wrote them and shared them, first with each other, and now with you, our loyal readers.
