Markers I mark my shirts with masking tape-- clues about the stain-- coffee this time. I wonder what the cleaner thinks when she opens my laundry and looks for these now expected notes? Selecting the spot remover before tossing it in the machine, does her image mirror mine-- wondering what kind of person drops a bit of every meal as an emblem on the cloth? As I read the passage for this morning at the start of Lent, inked stained bits of alphabet on a white cloth page, I imagine I’m the launderer, and God is leaving clues. 8 Mar 03 © Copyright 2003, E.
