Preface This year's retreat was centered on "Faith in the Face of Fear," led by Father Richard McKeon of Dobbs Ferry, NY. Some of the poems are reflections on the Bible stories on which Father McKeon based the five meditations during the weekend (e.g., "Luke"). Some are reflections on fears I have experienced ("San Mateo, October 1989"). Other are about the silence, it's richness and awkwardness ("An Award Silence," "Silent," "Other Sounds," and "Breakfast."). The remainder are about the surrounding countryside ("Driving to the top of Mohawk Mountain") or things hinted at by the experience of an early morning sun and sky ("A Sunday in March"). Of these eight short pieces, "A Sunday in March" is my favorite, hearkening to the Easter that approaches at the close of Lent. I hope you enjoy the poems. If you have thoughts or questions, please send me a note at mailto:ehapp@hpmd.com . If one or more speaks to you, then I am doubly blessed.
