Other sounds

In a room of people
waiting in silence,
you hear the other
sounds--
the turning of pages,
the small cough,
breathing,
shifting in a chair,
the scratch of a pencil
writing,
the passing airplane
somewhere outside,
a candy wrapper
opening,
the hum of a heater
in the basement.
In a room of people
waiting in silence,
you hear the other.
