Teacher’s Insomnia

Too tired for sleep,
close to dawn I analyze
dark’s ambient sounds

long u of the wind,

passing cars' soft g sustained,

short a of my child's dream-mumble,

and the cat's diphthong

at the sibilant window

she, like me,
a student of night's language,
crying to be let out.
