SATURDAY, July 15th, ALDRICH MUSEUM, Ridgefield: Summer Music Series - Outdoor Concert 4 - 6 p. m. with poet Corey Cokes and Singer ODETTA. COREY COKES was a member of the 1996 National Poetry Slam Championship team from Providence. Corey recently released his first full-length spoken word album, entitled "Coreyography." The Billboard Magazine review follows: Corey was once a member of the grammy winning ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT project FUSION, which toured nationally in the early 90's. He was a member of the '96 Providence Slam team that won Nationals, delivering the knock-out, winning delivery at Finals night with his poem "That Moment". He is now touring Nationally as a solo artist, with his CD, and his new book, "Whinin' Won't Get You Nuthin' But Candy" is due out in the Spring, when a European tour is then scheduled. Corey is a strong voice for his people of the Black Diaspora. With poems like "MasterBlas ter", a historical tribute to Nat Turner the rebel slave; "Hilfigga Nigga", a slam on the sell-out of the fashion industry; "Trainspotting", a poem about a group of white folks using the "N-word" in front of him when on the train alone; and "Fight The Fight", full of historical perspective of why Corey continually and relentlessly rises up in his deep committment as a leading voice of Black America. And this CD shows us how he does just that.
